Honoring the Old, Building the New

Lummi Island is changing. What once was primarily a fishing and farming community is becoming something new. And we care deeply about being a part of that transformation. 

We want to help preserve what makes this place special while helping it grow into its next chapter.

  • Depending on the client’s vision, we love to incorporate Pacific Northwest Character into our finishes by utilizing natural wood, local materials, and architecture that compliments the landscape. 

  • Whether it’s a historic home renovation or a new build on your family’s generational land, we always aim to honor what came before by creating something built for the next generations of islanders. 

  • We want to be a part of building Lummi Island up by creating more opportunity, more local jobs, and more reasons for families to call this island home. 

  • Without a doubt, you’ll see us at Happy Hour at The Galley, boating around the San Juan Islands, fishing and crabbing around the island, and hiking the Baker Preserve trail. And that’s the way we like it!

Meet Joe Smith

I grew up on Lummi Island, and for as long as I can remember, I was always building something. My dad, Manly Smith, taught me young about the value of hard work.  He showed me it was more important to do a job right than to just do it fast, a lesson that has always stuck with me.

At 23, I bought my first piece of property and built a home on it myself, start to finish. That’s when something clicked: home building wasn't just something I was good at, it was my passion. Since then, every project has taught me something new and keeps me improving at my craft.

In 2015, I started Hadfield Construction with a simple goal: 

  • build exceptional homes

  • be honest with people

  • treat every project like it's my own. 

Because on an island this size, every build is connected to the heart of our community.  I'm not just a contractor here, I'm your neighbor.

My partner, Brittany Swaen, and I recently purchased the Islander Store property, where we’re working to revitalize this longtime island gathering place and create a space that serves the community for years to come.

When I’m not working on a construction project or something at the Islander, you can usually find me island-hopping around the San Juans, out fishing, or spending time with our dogs, Shio and Stevie, and cats, Charlie and Rocky.

Why the Fox?

Our logo means more to me than most people realize. My dad's side of the family used to run a fox farm right here, on the exact Lummi Island property I live on today. On my mom's side, her grandfather ran a paint company in England, and their cans were stamped with a leaping fox. Two totally different family stories, on opposite sides of the world, that somehow landed on the same symbol. 

When it came time to build a logo for this company, I wanted something that represented how I feel about this place: deeply connected to the history of where we’ve been, while leaping forward into building something new for our community.
